While E3 2021 may be over, Call of Duty fans know that there's still at least one big announcement left to make this summer. 2021's annual Call of Duty game has yet to be revealed, but it's just a matter of time. In the time being, fans are enjoying all of the rumors and speculation about what could be in development. They're also offering up ideas and hopes for what they like to see, such as one popular Reddit post asking for customizable scorestreaks to return.
A user on Reddit made a post showing a screenshot taken from Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare with the title, "Why have we never seen customizable scorestreaks since AW?" The Reddit post made in the Black Ops Cold War subreddit has accrued over 1,000 upvotes, a large amount for the smaller Call of Duty community, as well as over 250 comments. The screenshot, naturally, shows a loadout using Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's customizable scorestreak's feature.

Custom scorestreaks are not a common feature in Call of Duty games whatsoever. The feature was implemented in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and grew popular there. Since then, however, the feature hasn't been brought back. The closest it's been since is with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which featured scorestreak variants. These, however, were significantly less popular, as they couldn't be earned through normal means.
It's understandable why custom scorestreaks haven't been brought back, too, as interesting as the feature seems on paper. It's already challenging to balance scorestreaks in annual Call of Duty games as it is, let alone with so many different variables to take into consideration. The variant scorestreaks system was supposed to pare down some of the possibilities, but had its own flaws. Call of Duty games since have explored different ways of offering options to players.
The comments in the Reddit thread are sympathetic to both the thread creator and Call of Duty's developers. Some point out it would take a lot of effort to do, while others say innovating is a part of the process. Others say that it would take effort, only as an insult, insinuating Call of Duty developers aren't looking to put that kind of work into options for Call of Duty games anymore.
For the most part, the replies are very much in agreement with the sentiment, however. There are several comments talking about their favorite scorestreak customizations, including wall-hacking UAVs and more. While it's not impossible that the next Call of Duty game could feature customizable scorestreaks, fans probably shouldn't get their hopes up. For now, it seems like nostalgia will have to do.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was originally released for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
