Battlefield 2042 will only have a small selection of maps to begin with, but but EA and Dice promise more will come post-launch.

Fans can expect to learn more about this year's Battlefield 2042 later this month during the EA Play Live presentation, but EA has decided to share some new information already. Specifically, it's regarding the game's maps, how they'll work, and how many fans can expect to be included at launch.

At first, the game will feature only seven maps, which isn't an awful lot but they are meant to be impressively large, especially on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. As a reminder, the maps need to accommodate upwards of 128 players, easily making this the biggest entry in the Battlefield series yet in terms of scale.

The official Battlefield 2042 website also lists all seven maps, and provides a brief description and image for each one. Their names are Orbital (Kourou, French Guiana), Hourglass (Doha, Qatar), Kaleidoscope (Songdo, South Korea), Manifest (Brani Island, Singapore), Discarded (Alang, India), Breakaway (Queen Maud Land, Antarctica), and Renewal (Eastern Desert, Egypt).

Naturally, EA and DICE already intend on adding further maps post-launch. It was even confirmed very recently that classic maps from previous Battlefield games would be added as part of an as-of-yet unannounced game mode. EA and DICE haven't shared anything beyond that, but it sounds like more specifics will be shared during the EA Play Live presentation.

EA has also clarified about how maps in the game will work. Firstly, to optimize large-scale battles, two major changes have been made to the Conquest mode, called Clustering and Sectors. The former creates deliberate areas of activity and capture areas for players to engage with while the latter changes how players gain control of an area. To capture a Sector, teams must seize and maintain control over every flag within it.

Also, despite being much bigger, certain areas of the maps won't be available depending on the game mode. So, areas accessible in the Conquest mode are locked off in the Breakdown mode and vice versa. EA says this is one of the advantages to having giant play-spaces since it means both modes can better off unique experiences.

Plus, while players can enter skyscrapers, not every level of them is accessible. Skyscraper bouts will be restricted to the lobby and rooftop since including every level would basically make them maps in and of themselves.

Lastly, EA ensures that there will be no differences in content between the two generations. Basically, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners can look forward to the same weapons, vehicles, and features included in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. However, the previous-gen versions will be restricted to 64 player battles and crossplay has been confirmed to be limited as well.

Battlefield 2042 releases on October 22nd for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
