Kingdom Hearts may have a reputation for being complex, but it's relatively straightforward to play through for those who put in the time.

The Kingdom Hearts franchise is a bit notorious for having a complicated list of entries. It's difficult to even nail down a simple answer to how many games are in the series, thanks to multiple re-releases and now defunct mobile/browser games. However, several collections have been made to consolidate Kingdom Hearts as a series, and the most recent collection, Kingdom Hearts: All-In-One-Package, contains every game up to Kingdom Hearts 3.

The series can be a bit daunting to new players wondering just how much playtime awaits them. The franchise is actually straightforward to play through, and some games can be experienced through cutscene movies rather than the full gameplay experience.

Some games aren't included in game form in the latest collection. 358/2 Days and Re:Coded were both Nintendo DS titles and were remastered as cutscene movies for the collections. Their playtimes will still be included, and both are still worth playing separately.

  • The original Kingdom Hearts' main story clocks in at 28.5 hours, and a completionist playthrough would take around 62 hours.
  • Chain of Memories' main story takes about 23 hours to complete, and a completionist playthrough clocks in at around 57 hours.
  • Kingdom Hearts 2's main story clocks in at 29.5 hours, and a completionist playthrough clocks in at around 66 hours.
  • Kingdom Hearts Coded was a Japan-only mobile release, but Re:Coded later released internationally as a Nintendo DS game. Its story clocks in at 16 hours, and a completionist playthrough would be 54 hours.
  • 358/2 Days has 26.5 hours of main story, and a completionist playthrough clocks in at 51.5 hours.
  • Birth By Sleep has 29 hours of main story, and a completionist playthrough clocks in at about 71 hours.
  • Dream Drop Distance has 20 hours of main story, and a completionist playthrough clocks in at 56 hours.
  • 0.2 Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage's story is only three hours long, but extra content makes a completionist playthrough last for about 11 hours.
  • Kingdom Hearts 3 has 28 hours of main story, and a completionist playthrough clocks in at 63 hours.
  • Melody of Memory is a rhythm game with 9.5 hours' worth of story. A completionist playthrough clocks in at 52 hours for all of the actual gaming content.

In addition to the games, there is also the movie Kingdom Hearts X: Back Cover, which is only an hour long. It revolves around the Foretellers and the story elaborated upon in Kingdom Hearts Union X. With regards to KHUX and Dark Road, both mobile games contained within the same app, the online service has already been discontinued. The app will still be downloadable in order to experience the story. Dark Road's cutscenes lead up to about an hour of story content. KHUX is harder to nail down numbers for, but cutscenes lead to about eight hours of actual main story content.

In all, the main story of Kingdom Hearts leads to 223 hours of playtime, while completionists have about 553 hours of playtime ahead of them. As the series has jumped across many systems through the years, the best and most concise way to experience the series is through the collections available for PS4. The remastered versions contain new graphics, new gameplay and new content.

The Kingdom Hearts: All in One Package is available on PlayStation 4.
