While there will always be debate on which Fallout game is the best, there's no doubt that Fallout: New Vegas holds a special place in the hearts of many. Its overarching story, from the beginning to the end of New Vegas' Lonesome Road DLC, tells a specular story only possible within this finely-tuned world. This setting, too, has made the game really popular among mods.
In many ways, a good mod can be a decent replacement for a missing sequel. Many fans want Fallout: New Vegas 2 to be a real thing, whether it's a direct sequel in the Mojave Wasteland or a spiritual successor set in New Orleans. Either way, one mod takes this naming structure "New Location" and runs with it in yet another perfect location for a successor: New Mexico.

Modder VerasTeam2077 originally uploaded this project in May 2021 and has thus far released two teaser trailers for it. This Fallout: New Vegas mod takes players to New Mexico in 2285, complete with a new story line, map, side quests, and more. It promises players the ability to explore "the post-apocalyptic nculear-radiated wastes of New Mexico" as well as "its darkest secrets." Exact plot details and release date have yet to be determined, but from the Modder's comments and the two teasers, the mod has a lot to work with.
The inspiration comes from a trip to New Mexico, where the modder fell in love with the state. Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and the desert all stood out to the modder, which is likely why much of Albuquerque has been shown. Santa Fe and the desert would also work well in this Fallout: New Vegas mod, and it seems some elements on the mod would come from the history of Project Roswell and its UFO and the Manhattan Project too.
The second teaser shows a lot of the Fallout: New Mexico mod, as well as its environments, cities, bars, and enemies. It has an overly barren and somber tone, which is what to be expected post apocalypse, but it has that general, classic vibe of Fallout too. The latest teaser was posted in July, so perhaps in the coming weeks or months, more news will be revealed. Needless to say though, based on the promises and the teasers, the mod looks quite ambitious.
For many fans, it won't replace a proper Fallout: New Vegas 2 game, but anything short of an Obsidian-developed Fallout: New Vegas successor couldn't. Those who want to scratch that similar itch, however, especially given how any new Fallout game is easily years away—if not a decade or more—may want to keep an eye on this mod.
No new Fallout game is known to be in development.
