Since its inception back in 2014, the Destiny series has created an expansive world. In the game’s universe, the developers have weaved a complex web of interconnecting stories and lore for players to uncover. In the years since Destiny 2 launched, its following DLCs have only served to add more interesting characters such as Eramis to the game along with even deeper lore. Recently, one fan of the series devised a way of making the franchise more accessible for those new to the first-person shooter.
Added at the start of the Season of the Lost, the Timeline is a new feature created by Bungie to make the game's story easier to understand for new players. Accessible through the Directory, the Timeline shows what downloadable content in the game players don’t own. Even though the feature might be a way for Bungie to make more money off its expansions, the Timeline serves as a type of history book containing details about Destiny 2's iconic Traveler and recaps of adventures throughout the previous seasons of the game. Despite providing an effective way for players to learn more about the story, some think the new feature could be improved.

In an attempt to get their roommate interested in Destiny 2, a Reddit user known as PCG_Crimson proposed a way for Bungie to improve the Timeline. While they noted that the idea of the Timeline was an excellent one, the inclusion of cutscenes from previous seasons would make the feature even better and help make people more invested in the game's story. The fan gave some examples of scenes that should be included such as the return of Saint-14, the destruction of the Almighty, and the Pyramid’s arrival. While many of these cutscenes are available to watch on YouTube, adding them to the Timeline would make it much easier for fans to access the videos and watch them in the correct chronological order.
Bungie, the new Timeline in the director is an excellent idea. Any chance old cutscenes could be added to it for new/returning players to get a better idea of what's happened? from DestinyTheGame
The Destiny 2 community on Reddit likes PCG_Crimson’s idea to add past cutscenes to the Timeline. With over 1,500 upvotes, many are in agreement that this feature would help players new to the series catch up on the story and lore they missed from previous seasons and expansions. Some even suggested adding a codex to give even more information on the various people, places, and weapons found in the game.
This news comes as Destiny 2’s new Season of the Lost has gone live. In addition to the Timeline feature, the update has brought new seasonal activities for players to take part in. Furthermore, new Exotic weapons and armor have been added to the game such as the new Void Linear Fusion Rifle called the Lorentz Driver. As Season of the Lost gets underway, it seems likely that a large number of new and returning players will use the Timeline to get up to speed with Destiny 2’s story. It will be interesting to see if Bungie ever decides to update the Timeline to make cutscenes available for players to watch in the future.
Destiny 2 is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
