Scarecrow is one of the most terrifying of Batman's villains, and there are some exciting actors who could take on the role opposite Robert Pattinson.

Though Matt Reeves's The Batman is still months away, fans are already thrilled about the possibilities of a new Batman franchise. Robert Pattinson is a very exciting choice to play Bruce Wayne aka Batman while there are a lot of other great casting choices to bring iconic characters to life. Some of the most anticipated performances are those of the movie's villains with Colin Farrell playing Penguin and Paul Dano playing Riddler. Along with the fun of getting to see new takes on these classic villains, it also raises the idea of what other Batman villains could appear in this new franchise.

One of the most intriguing villains in Batman rogues gallery is Scarecrow. He is one of the most terrifying of Batman's enemies and uses fear as a weapon. The character was memorably brought to life by Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and has appeared in just about every medium of which Batman has been a part. With the more grounded and darker take The Batman seems to be heading in, Scarecrow could be a really twisted bad guy for a future Batman movie and there are several great actors who could bring a new spin on the character.

Bo Burnham

Bo Burnham is best known as a comedian, especially with his recent hugely acclaimed special, Inside. However, Burnham has a showed considerable range as an actor that could fit quite well with this creepy villain role. In the comics, Jonathan Crane was an awkward and unassuming man who took up the mantle of Scarecrow to get revenge on those who wronged him. Burnham could find an interesting balance between comedic and scary in the role. His performance in Promising Young Woman was a good showcase of what he could do as an actor, appearing as the nice guy with a darker underside that is hidden. Burnham brought a lot of realism to that role which could have been very cliché. It could be very compelling to see him do something similar with a villain like Scarecrow and maintaining the realism this new Batman franchise is aiming for.

Kieran Culkin

Another interesting aspect of Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow is his creepy arrogance. He views himself as more intelligent than others and feels superior to them in that way. His crimes are also based on the fact that he feels he is owed certain things that are ultimately denied to him. That sort of slimy self-centered take on the villain could be played perfectly by Kieran Culkin. Despite being very likable in a number of roles, Culkin really excels at playing slimball characters such as with his turns in No Sudden Moves and Fargo. However, his acclaimed performance in the HBO series Succession is really where his potential for playing a villain can be seen. Culkin plays an entitled rich kid who thinks he should be in power despite not knowing what he is doing. Cillian Murphy's performance as Scarecrow, which was a standout aspect of Nolan's Batman movies, had a similar spoiled brat aspect to it which Culkin could really have fun with.

Aubrey Plaza

Though fans will get a chance to see Zoe Kravitz take on the role of Catwoman in The Batman, there are not too many other female villains for the Caped Crusader to go up against. However, gender-swapping Scarecrow could be a fun take on the character, especially with an actor like Aubrey Plaza taking on the role. While Plaza is mostly known for her comedic roles, such as in Parks and Recreation, however she has shown a lot of versatility in her movie roles since then. Plaza is very good at playing off-kilter characters and she would fit well into Crane's own outsider persona. Her role in the underrated dark comedy Ingrid Goes West also shows how skilled she is at played deranged and possibly dangerous characters. Given these skills, she seems primed to take on a big villain role. She could also bring a new dynamic to the character as it is rarely a female character shown to be inflicting fear on her victims.

Steven Yeun

Steven Yeun has found success playing endearing characters such as his breakout role in The Walking Dead or his Oscar-nominated role in Minari. However, Yeun's best performance to date is in an underseen Korean thriller called Burning. Yeun plays a young rich playboy who may or may not be a serial killer. Yeun gives a chilling performance hidden under a smiling and polite façade. It is a haunting role that shows he is more than ready to step into any comic book villain role. Just as Paul Dano's Riddler seems to be reimagined as a serial killer in this new version, Yeun could play the unassuming and possibly charming Jonathan Crane who is hiding his dark identity as the murderous Scarecrow.

Harry Melling

Harry Melling began his career as Harry Potter's bully of a cousin in the hugely successful franchise. However, Melling has since built a very successful career and seems destined to be a very exciting actor for years to come. Along with standout performances in The Queen's Gambit and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Melling gave a very creepy performance in the star-studded Netflix thriller The Devil All the Time. This performance showed the kind of unique take Melling could give to a character like Scarecrow. He plays the role of a man who believes he is doing good but performs horrible acts. Scarecrow could make for an interesting torture villain which would fit with the noir take of the new movie.
